The editing really made it look like it was Nina not putting the effort in. She said she didn't like to ask "what". That's a bad move. I don't think Nina was ditched because she was deaf, but because she's awkward.

It probably was a match of Mitochondrial DNA which is used in old, small, and/or degraded samples. mtDNA would have matched Ollie and Thea perfectly. Odd little bit of science that was actually correct.
