It's a great example of how messed up Hollywood is. Lynch was THE hot director at the time, but anyone with half a brain would realize that Lynch's aesthetic was definitely not geared for a big budget sci-fi epic. Still, they just had to have him because he was the "it" boy at the time.

Oh yeah, I watched it on Netflix last year. Fascinating stuff and he had some wonderfully daft ideas. It would have been one helluva hot mess…a different hot mess than Lynch's version but still a mess. I'd love to have a book of that gorgeous pre-production art.
