To my knowledge, it's not because Latino is a slur against Latina women… it's because some people don't fall into the male/female binary so they don't feel comfortable identifying with clear cut male "Latino" or clear cut female "Latina"

The competition in that paragraph is that of younger viewers. Handler isn't competing with Fallon in terms of numbers, but the youth of her audience.

Except for the 100th time, the context of the paragraph was about youngest audience not ratings.

The problem is the context was not total viewership but who has the youngest audience.

Exactly.

"That Handler has a low-rated show is of no import, any more than Ferguson or Hall's shows."

The correct way to use it would be "Chelsea Handler, 38 (the only female host in late night) is on E!" Thereby making her a full participant int he article, and adding that she's female in parenthesis. Her very existence on late night should not be parenthetical.
