Just re-watched the original and your assessment is spot-on. Tim Curry's performance was a masterpiece of horror, but the rest of the casts' acting was just a bunch of sad 80's has-beens trying to reclaim a little of their glory days.
Pennywise was not the "original terrifying clown". There were plenty of terrifying clowns before Mr King created him. I think the first mainstream psycho clown was the all-too-real John Wayne Gacey. But if you google "scary clown" you can be sure to find a plethora of unintentionally I'm-coming-to-eat-your-face photos…
