I'd love to see more Alex/Kara on the show—as the reviewer says, the two of them hanging out together is great—but I think the problem with Alex is that they're leaning heavily into the idea that she's into Max Lord, whom everyone knows is a super villain, and that her romantic attraction makes her act foolish around

Yes, agreed. It's normal and relatable for Kara to feel guilty about not being into Winn, because that's how girls are trained to respond to male affection, even when they aren't into the guys. But any decent sister should have responded with "It's not your fault. He'll get over it, and if he doesn't, he's not a good

Yeah, the previews for this have been awful, and scream Trying Too Hard.

A thousand times yes to this comment. The show has never established a sibling bond between Barry and Iris, just father-child bonds between both of them and Joe.

Very well-put.

I feel you, but did it honestly surprise you? She's won the damsel-in-distress category cleanly despite only appearing in 9 episodes.

Yes, but the show's investment in Patty was so low it was obvious she was never going to figure it out.

Agreed. Barry and Patty were like watching paint dry, especially since we all knew it was headed nowhere.

But Patty dumping Barry for the lousy boyfriend he is, and dumping him in favor of her longstanding personal career goals, was the only silver lining to a weak storyline.

I haven't read any other Rowell, but I really enjoyed Fangirl, and I feel like it captures the way this upcoming generation thinks and talks about mental illness in dead-on accurate ways, without being at all preachy.

I LOVE Americanah, but Half of a Yellow Sun is my personal favorite of her novels. It's the best book I've actually ever read about war.

Nice to hear that people liked the Autograph Man—I was scared off by the terrible reviews when it came out, and I too am not a fan of Smith's fiction, except for NW, which is odd but also made me glad I read it. I may look for AM in the future.

I second your nausea. I suffered VERY painfully through A Brief History of Seven Killings in audiobook, and while the cast of readers were incredible, the nonstop detailed gruesome murder, rape and torture scenes made it a slog.

I think we're supposed to agree with Jake that it's not a good idea. That theme seems likely to come up again.

So glad to see all the love for Jane the Virgin here!

Because she's better than all of them put together?

Yes, Ravi on iZombie is so excellent and so under recognized!

Wow, Orphan Black may have had some problems this year (though I think it had a few knockout episodes, especially the one where Sarah spoke with Beth), but even at its worst its writing is an order of magnitude better than Woman in Gold.

Yeah, I think Anders gets a huge boost from the script, while McIver spins a lot of straw to gold.

THIS. I am constantly amazed to find people singing Amell's praises on the internet.
