I thought he said… "I've never heard THE woman tell a joke before." Which led me to believe that he was referring to Claire specifically not women in general.

I know it's probably an adaptation choice in order to clarify it explicitly for the audience… but that Claire, after "some weeks" in the 18th century hasn't figured out how much she needs to protect and is protected by her status as an "honorable widow" (for lack of a better term) struck me as very odd.

There needs to be a term for an ill thought out scene with rape or implied rape that didn't fit in with the overall story.
