Ya, apparently this is based on a Finnish show which is itself based on a 30 year-old American show.
In fairness, I don't know that that's the case. But it was widely discussed and very general knowledge at the time, and I don't think she started talking openly about it until it had already been part of the pop culture awareness for a while.
