Some people would consider rape worse than murder. Some people have committed suicide after being raped.

It could be that the writers wanted to maintain empathy for the female characters and believe that it is easier for viewers to empathise with females who are passive victims. I think this is a sad reflection on our society that they find it more comfortable to show a rape than they do a woman's overt sexuality.…
