So does the ballot/machine essentially function as a scantron sheet/reader?

It seems crazy to me that you vote on all that in one day. I doubt most people would have a good sense of all the candidates, aside from party. Can you bring in a cheat sheet?
Are city council members/school reps officially Democrat or Republican (and listed as such on the ballot)?
