I was freaked out by Return to Oz, too (although you're right, it's much more similar in tone to the original books than the 1939 musical version, with an age-appropriate Dorothy and a dark sense of humor), but let's not knock the darkness of Harry Potter…dead parents in the first chapter of the book, screaming books,

Well, I mean, at least Ironhide got out one last "Nooo…" before he got a bazooka to the face…"Such heroic nonsense."

At 11 years old in 1986, I had already been exposed to some pretty extreme and adult stuff in animation (ended up seeing bits of Heavy Metal on scrambled cable in my youth and saw just enough to blow my mind), but to have the Transformers movie open with an entire planet being destroyed, followed by the opening
