I generally like what the TV show is doing, both in what it's staying faithful to and what it's changing. But losing Josh is a big, big deal and I really miss having him in the mix.

(1) Quentin is mostly a jerk-face man-child and his is the primary perspective, so there's that filter.
(2) The books absolutely do have a problem with how they characterize (or fail to) women. It's a whole fridged meets magical pixie girl mess.

But 'The Magicians' wasn't really a book about a world full of magic. It involved a world full of magic, sure, but a large part of the point was that a world full of magic doesn't necessarily make anything better.

The show seems to be implying that there's a background process going on in Kilgrave's mind that keeps a command active for that time. And if you anesthetize him, that process stops.
