I loved how this film, for the first time really, brought the crew actually together and have them as a team resolve the thread. The first one was mostly about how Kirk and Spock's friendship formed. The second one, though entertaining, got too hung up on that whole 'keep it a secret that it's actually a Wrath of Khan…

Yeah, I agree with that. And like I said, I could also imagine that talks between Gilligan/Gould and AMC about how and when to end the series might delay the renewal.

You know, some shows do that. Others don't. Do you want or expect character development from Selina Meyer? From Dick Solomon? George Costanza? Al Bundy? Wouldn't those shows be half as funny if they suddenly became, I dunno, decent human beings?
