New Zealander here. He is not exaggerating: we really, really loved this show. It was weird to discover it was a barely-known cult hit in the US.

Thinking was, if I remember right, along the lines of "this will probably be awkward for her lol" but became "no, you idiot, this is actually really awkward for you as well, argh"
