    Especially as the extended, often superfluous sex stuff is the least interesting bit in GoT, and goes to the detriment of the more interesting plots.     Wonderfully put. I would say a lot of the soul of the show came from Ragnar's interaction with Athelstan and Ecbert (and in some good moments with Bjorn and Ivar towards the end). This dynamic is sorely needed. There was also great soul in Ecbert / Athelstan moments.

    I found Aethelwulf a compelling figure the last 3 episodes, as much as I hated the 1-dimensional way he was written before. Hs scene with Alfred is very touching. As others said, the screen did not explain the changes.
