I've always thought of MM as a bit of a magic realist text actually. It's not just the visions, but the dreamy, numinous atmosphere of some episodes. Obviously you can apply real world logic to these things, but the relatively high incidence of them does give the drama an, I think intentional, otherworldly edge.
