I haven't watched yet, but I'm glad to read that they haven't indulged too deeply in latching on to contemporary pop-culture as shorthand for seeming relevant and "hip." Many a classic update have gone that route, and it often reads as pandering and cheap, and becomes dated quicker than its source material ever could.

I agree. And the way the film is crafted you really do *feel* all the gore, even if you don't see it all. I've seen movies far gorier than this and still, this one had me wincing way more than I usually do.
