Scrawler, that's exactly how I felt about GBH, which I also saw this weekend. Visually, it's Anderson at his height. But the character work left just a smidge to be desired which is what is currently keeping it off the top tier of Anderson's films for me. That said, I also believe it is going to improve on re-watch.

My problem with the Great Beauty is the opening party sequence. It feels like it was guest directed by Baz Luhrmann, whose style I've never been able to stomach. It slows down after the opening 20 minutes of manic over the top extravaganza but by that point it had pretty much lost me and didn't try particularly hard…
