Agreed. This is a first novel, and an exciting one at that. I think the insufferable ones are now the adults and, er, poseurs now trying to distance themselves from their younger, less cool selves who were still developing their palette. "Oh, I used to be into that band before I discovered even more obscure band X,

Words hurt, man.

While it would be nice if the people who make such hateful comments would see this and see the error of their ways ("Hey, Maybe I should act like a human being!"), I'm not sure they are the intended audience. We know they are gonna be awful.

Ugh. The "stick to sports" crowd makes my blood boil. How dare a reporter point out sexism or racism or even a safety issue? Just be a PR agent for the leagues, and help them sweep any conduct, no matter how horrible, under the rug.

Sure. But it's more than just consumer choices, it's also peer pressure and putting forth the proper image to your peer group. As a dad, I have no one left to impress. My wife knows I'm a big dork, and my kids want a dad, not someone concerned with their cool quotient. Dads don't care if you think they're lame.

Dad rock is a term invented to disparage Pearl Jam. It's to remind us that Pearl Jam is now classic rock and we're getting old now. I went through a period of irrationally hating Led Zeppelin, so I get it. Now, Physical Graffiti sits comfortably next to my L7 records.

As a dad, I'm thrilled to be uncool. Yes, I'm the guy who has to tell my kids "No" and set down rules they have to follow. I miss out on the new movies because I'm at home with my kids, or a bunch of great shows because I'm watching some Disney movie for the zillionth time, and when I have a moment, I'd rather listen

It feels like they are laying the groundwork for Iron Fist which… makes me apprehensive of Iron Fist.

I think I like Season 2 better, though I haven't seen the final two episodes yet. But I do agree with Sava that the Hand plotline isn't working. I just liked everything else. I think the grade for this episode is a bit harsh, but yeah… the Hand stuff is C material.

I have, and I agree that this is completely intentional in order to sidestep the potentially racist foundation of the Punisher character. This version of the Punisher exists as a commentary on Daredevil and vigilante superheroes in general. They are trying not to get bogged down in the image of a violent, aggrieved

But does that apply to THIS show? I mean, does Daredevil, particularly S2 DD, have a problem with minority casting? And do they murder off the "token" character?

I hate 2016.

Meet John Doe? Woo hoo!

I know you're being snarky, but I'll give a serious answer: because being exposed to hateful words and the people who speak them actually makes us kinder and more empathetic. We start to see them not as cartoonish racists, but as actual people. Maybe misguided people, but people just as in need of love and kindness as

I'm glad people outside the Demographic love it, too. It is so tied to southern lore, it hurts. Everything feels too familiar, right down to the Buford Pusser analog. A book like this, it gets all of the details of southern small towns right. Perfect tone setting.

I think we have seen catastrophic self-censorship. Liberals and conservatives largely do not talk to each other online, except for hardcore trolls. We've cordoned ourselves off from rational critiques from the other side of the aisle, because using the wrong buzzwords will likely send the other side into fits of anger.

Protecting our children from harmful speech has crippled them intellectually and socially. You need to be confronted with harmful and yes, sometimes hateful ideas in order to learn how to deal with things that do not conform to your worldview. Safe spaces and the like are terrible not just because it restricts one

The only solution to "bad speech" is more speech.

I love Southern Bastards, but I also feel it would be odd to honor a comic about violent, southern men from small towns in a year of such diverse nominees. I love that the hardback edition includes recipes for classic southern dishes from their grandmas.

To each their own, but I'm not a huge fan of the Best Series category nominees. I feel the Best New Series and Best Limited Series are both stronger categories. I don't dislike any of the nominees, but none of them were my faves. Except maybe Southern Bastards, which might have been made specifically for me, but I
