You'll need STR 15 to wear Splint or Plate, which presumably, is why your Wizard multiclassed into fighter. If you are playing point buy, that's a very heavy investment into what is normally a dump stat.

"Out of combat" generally comes from character Background, rather than class abilities. The reduced spellcasting means a wizard who preps "non-combat" spells risks being not very useful in a fight. It's not nearly as unbalanced on that score as 2nd edition was.

The hassle of needing a character builder (and a six page character sheet) to play was a main source of frustration. Am thrilled that 5e sends me back to a character that can be fit on one sheet of paper without needing additional reference.

Actually, you don't have ready access to Magic items in 5th edition. Unlike 3rd or 4th edition, you can't craft, buy or sell Magic items. You only get what your find in the adventures, or what DM is willing to give out.
