There are a bunch of references dropped in, including stuff in Urdu/Hindi, that will absolutely kill you if you know the background/language but might not hit as hard or might not…
I agree I don't really care if it was "comedy" or not, as the lines are getting blurred anyway. He really downplays a lot of his jokes, slipping them in there without waiting for a laugh. I wasn't expecting it to be so emotionally demanding but I thought it was fantastic in the end.
It's not really about "racism" either. It's not ultimately about identity politics, it's much more humanistic than that. It's an interesting and intimate look at growing up in America.
To be honest, I actually don't understand why people don't like the show. It's like a puzzle I'm trying to figure out because it doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Unlikable characters? That was Girls, front to back — and somehow I think the characters here come off as less terrible and more appealing than the Girls…
