That does actually make me feel a bit better about the show, because in recent weeks I've been getting the feeling that the writers were twisting a true hateful rivalry to suit their own overly-romanticized thematic narrative.

Depends on your definition of blockbuster I guess. American Sniper came out a couple years ago and grossed a hell of a lot more than The Matrix. Passion of the Christ grossed more too. Avatar blew it out of the water (and despite the Cameron name it still felt like the success came out of nowhere). And as mentioned

Jesus people, lets have some sympathy for the kids here. Their 2 parenting options are "Alex Jones" and "Person who would marry Alex Jones".

Oh no, way earlier. He was already getting raves after The Believer.

To be fair I believe Gunn has made comment that he rewrote her script from the bottom up.

Marvel movies are put together by committees. If there isn't enough action in the script they'll bring in someone to punch the action up, and if the directors aren't great with action you can almost be certain that there'll be a 2nd unit director to take care of it. The guy who directed John Wick, for example,

Not to mention that Half Nelson of all things is quite a minor film. To claim that it launched his career is just fucking weird.

What the fuck is with that shot where the reporter drives into frame, receives an email mid-speech, and then casually rolls away when she's done speaking??

"Well you eat an entire fucking tanning bed."

Unfortunately he's not really involved with this season very much beyond the pilot. Moved onto his HBO show.

There's a reason the Bake-Off gets so much attention on AV Club. That's because it's delightful. Fucking delightful.

You're thinking of the Great British Baked Off

I totally sounds like one. All it needs is a name in the title… Jordan Danger and the Lost City of Z.

The only Game of Thrones actor who's faceless is Pedro Pascal.

This isn't the Oscars, prominence is not their only concern. Minhaj is a talented up and comer who could add a lot more than a lot of well known comedians.

Yeah a shame they couldn't get people of the caliber of Wanda Sykes and Seth Meyers

Absolutely repulsive! Anyway, back to Today's Best Deals.

Well there is one cause for concern - Vince Gilligan isn't really involved with this season. He directed and co-wrote the pilot but apart from that (and I'm assuming helping out with a vague outline) he's moved onto his HBO show.

I dunno man, you seem to be under the impression that innovation only counts if it's got positive ramifications. Bay completely changed the action-movie landscape by introducing a style that's actually quite distinct. He took things that came before him (that's includes Russell Mulcahy and his music video influences),

Except that creating and expanding is exactly what Bay did because that bombastic action style that's been driving people crazy for the last 20 years? He's pretty much the primary reason for it. I mean, of course he had his inspirations but there is a reason the guy's name is synonymous with mindless action. Like him
