"Gone with the Wind" and "Rosemary's Baby" were both excellent movies based on excellent books. In both cases, the books' plots and characters were left pretty much intact with no major changes made for the movie. I totally agree with King about the 1980 Kubrick version of "The Shining." You didn't really feel for the characters, and the "horror" was too stylishly artsy to hit your emotions.
