Re: The Original Series - the networks actually didn't mind the female First Officer in the first pilot, they minded that she was a shit actress who got the role because she was Roddenberry's girlfriend. Over the decades the story got twisted around by Roddenberry to make him look like a pioneer of TV feminism.
