I definitely do not disagree. Virginia, though usually far more sympathetic than Bill, is certainly not without her pride (bordering on hubris, as she herself says) and as mentioned- she's not above the occasional compromising of her/their integrity… She can be a ruthless pragmatist and manipulator, very much on level

I think Bill's eagerness to use their "success" with the ape was
supposed to be him passively aggressively mirroring Virginia's
willingness to tout Isabella Ricci's treatment as a triumph for publicity's
sake. She was all for (or at least pragmatic about) using that farce as a
nugget for Newsweek & their readership.
