The 2005 film cost 100 million to make and made 330 million.
The sequel to that film cost 130 million and made 289 million.
Both grosses are world-wide totals. So, they did turn a profit - but after marketing, etc. "not much" when compared against expectations of Fox.

I wouldn't call it awful, but I would call it average. I didn't see it in the theater, but rather blu-ray some months after. I had friends that just absolutely loved it. My reaction when I got to the end was "Alright, that's it?"
