No, i don't think they're necessarily a bad thing either, but if all people do is get COEXIST bumper stickers and feel satisfied that that is enough, it's not enough, especially if they fail to live according to the slogan.

Agreed that signaling can serve a social function. Again, I don't think it's necessarily bad to virtue signal at all. It can only become a problem when you use it in place of action, or to create an unnecessary hierarchy among allies, or if it's being used for manipulation, etc.
