Never read or heard of the comic, but I'm enjoying this weird show IMMENSELY so far!

He's vaguely aware that his mother and "uncle" are corrupt and shady ("You don't have to answer to the Gods when you're on the throne," "You don't like Margaery, do you?", his mom's incestuous affairs, hunger for power, etc.), and he wants to break away from their influence and find a better path. But I think he does have a motivation. He wants to be "good."
