Totally agree that "stay-at-home dad = inadequate" was lame. The supposed "fix," I'm pretty sure, was Raimy's heart to heart with him about her mother's death. Until they had that convo, Gordo blamed himself, thinking she died because she went to pick him up at school instead of being at home, safe and sound.

I really don't want to be dickish, but twice in one paragraph was too much: When you're talking about the Bernhardt family members (plural), it's Bernhardts, not Bernhardt's (be smarter than the red squiggly underline that tells you it's wrong).
