At least the writers seem to be aware of this trope and have actually made fun of it. In "Mother Tucker" from S2 we get this exchange (substituting "dumb" for "hot" and "smart" for "unattractive" as Hollywood always does…)

OMG I thought this was the season finale (and was rather disappointed) until I read this. Too funny! I'm glad there's more to come, but that's kind of indicative of the anticlimactic nature of each of this show's episodes… SO not used to any resolution here.
