The Replacements were almost always drunk on stage during that time. For better or worse, it was part of who they were as a band and forms a huge part of their legend. Insecurity may have played a part, but I'm not sure it was the main driver as much as plain rebelliousness.

You should consider the alternate and more likely explanation: they were very, very drunk at the time.
