The refusal to explain away a villain using backstory reminds me of the Joker in TDK, changing his story each time just because he thought it was funny to let people, just for a second, think their narratives could somehow control or explain him.
Season 6 was a bit muddled, but much like this review says LOST still was able to hit those poignant moments so well.

I don't understand how "The Fall" is still being considered good. Season 1 was unique, well-paced, well-acted … even if the dialogue was pretty stilted and preachy.

This is so good. Agree with every word.
The most obvious explanation is she was born with zero human empathy. She's a monster. A monster it's fun as hell to watch in action, but a monster nonetheless.
