I love this film so we're on the same team here … that being said, the movie really isn't about their reunion, it's about hope (specifically for Red) and his ability to find it. The essence of hope is it being for something that hasn't been fulfilled. I would have been just fine with ending on the words "I hope …"

I've always felt the movie's world just needs to be internally coherent. If this is a movie that involves heaven or hell or eternal destinies than graft that in to the core of the movie's universe. In Event Horizon hell was "and then what if through the black hole …?!?!?" pre-M. Night Shamamalamalayn unearned twist.
Where we're going we don't NEED satisfying plot catharsis.
