Writing off half the country as irredeemable racist monsters is not a good human strategy, let alone a long-term political one. Yes, the desperation of the working class in the "red states" was a major slice of the pie, but so was the venomous condescension of the left.

Trump got elected for a big, shitty pie chart of reasons, and the left was responsible for more slices of it than we'd like to admit. I'd say that "oversimplifying and misrepresenting opposing viewpoints" is definitely high on the list of things we stole from the right and really ran with.

Not anymore. The good guys have taken every tactic of the right and improved upon it. We have proven ourselves to be just as good at hate, ignorance, and fear as they ever were and it's a big part of what got Trump elected.

There's nothing about that statement that wouldn't have been wholeheartedly supported by the snarky content mills if it were said about Obama's kids. The joke teller would have been descended upon with the swift vengeance only the internet could provoke.
