Gorman did threaten him, and then the doc said who would patch up Gorman when he needs it. Gorman said he had the feeling the doc wouldn't always be the only doc around. This is what led to the doc having Beth unwittingly kill the other doc.

Because if he loses his position he will be turned out into zombie world or killed by the asshole cops. He actually says this to Beth. It's more about survival than status.
