I agree with the tomato paste as a substitute when time is an issue, however flavour does count. If there is enough time to do it right, use whole tomatoes (scald first to remove skin). Where I live, tomatoes are cheap enough to use in everything. Even at their most expensive, they go for about 2.50/kilo with peak

The red ingredient in chili is red pepper. You can add tomato if you wish, but they must be whole, not canned. And certainly not processed into ketchup.
