    There's a lot going on in that movie that people seem to go out of their way to dismiss. Batman has killed in all his previous cinematic iterations, including Bale's. In BvS they actually seemed to link it with his aberrant mental state… I think many of his actions in that movie mirror the US response after 9/11.

    The Perestroika was very controversial in the USSR. If the coup against Gorbachev had been successful, its very possible that they would have backtracked and doubled-down on a policy of aggression.

    I think the callback to the Bush Doctrine is very deliberate. Obviously that doctrine is pretty moronic… but in the months following 9/11, it was very attractive to a lot of people on both sides of the political spectrum.     I don't think it's a misreading… this is a jaded Batman that's over a decade in. I suspect that the end of the movie will be Batman learning that he can trust Supes.
