I do no know if you noticed, but this season is clearly more focused on the psychological elements and character development, beyond the 5/9 hack consequences.

The whole idea of a good writer is to rise above himself, offer to the viewer something NEW - so it makes complete sense for him to tease the way he does.
I am glad that this show isn't trying it's hardest to be a people pleaser - this kind of people pleasing approach has made too many good shows so bad.
