I think it's worth noting that the final hang on the lily of the valley was hammering home a thematic point as well as a plot one. Jesse's description of the berries - they "taste sweet, and sometimes kids eat them and wind up poisoning themselves" - is a pretty straight metaphor for the lure of cooking.
