    Funny! I had to think about that for minute.

    He's made some gems, and a few clunkers. My wife and I still have some serious disagreements over Thelma and Louise. But all in all, his body of work is pretty impressive. Gladiator (despite a few historical flaws) is definitely a gold medal movie.

    Love that name! I have fond memories of Fearless Fosdick and Li'l Abner.

    I'll ask my son if he has it. He outgrew Dune at some point, but if the encyclopedia was released during his Dune era, I'm sure he got it.

    My uncle, in his 80s, has watched Gump a thousand times, and repeats the dialogue constantly. Sometimes a movie just grabs someone that way.

    This was about the same time that all the Hollywood types were wearing their red ribbons on the award shows, so maybe they figured everyone would know what the disease was.

    One of my kids was so into the Dune novels. He swears that the low point of his life was seeing the movie version of Dune. I assured him that if he lived long enough he would endure much worse tragedies than seeing a beloved not turned into a bad movie.

    Before I ever saw the movie, someone told me that she dies of AIDS. I've seen the movie twice, and both times I missed any reference to AIDS.

    Candide is kind of a universal type. You could argue that Jed Clampett was a Candide figure, or Rose on the Golden Girls.

    The book is fine on its own terms, but I'm sure anyone who expected the movie to follow the book was disappointed. The movie seems to be like a piece of Rorschach art, I've heard both liberals and conservatives praise it for radically different reasons.
