This is my favorite Wiki Wormhole since the voodoo one.

Given that they were absorbed into the new Ghibli studio after helping to make the excellent Nausicaa, it seems to me that it was up they went, not down.

I didn't see it until I was an adult (my wife showed it to me, having enjoyed it as a kid), and I liked it quite a bit. Apart from the impulse toward "comic" relief, it holds up well as a bit of trippy 80s fantasy.

I think they paved the way for blockbusters of all kinds. A lot of people put that on Star Wars, since it came a year earlier, but I feel that the Superman movies are more to blame. I've written about that little theory of mine, glad to see it discussed here as well.
