I'd say there was were already interesting, unbland portrayals of Mickey leading up to his appearance in Kingdom Hearts, such as House of Mouse and Runaway Brain.

Having seen the new Mickey Mouse shorts (which is now into its third season), I wouldn't describe the character as "whitewashed"; he demonstrates a noticeable mean streak alongside the good-heartedness we commonly associate with him.
