I agree. While I think some of the situations were a little stagy and some of the characterizations a bit ham-fisted - the stories of bigotry among people of color were more interesting, something not often portrayed in mainstream Hollywood films.

DNA trace seems weird. Why would Ben's DNA be in any state/fed databases for her to search and find his birth mother? Had he committed some crime before or joined the military - those are the most common databases; none of which would be accessible to a reporter.
