    Actually, until about 200-300 years ago, basically all of literature was fanfiction. The best storyteller on the block was the person who could put a cool new spin on Greek myths or Arthurian legends. Paradise Lost and Dante's Inferno are bible fanfiction. All of Western art for a solid millennium is Bible fanart.
