I absolutely love The Terror.  In fact, I like it so much that I've since tracked down and read nearly all of Dan Simmons' other novels, still waiting for him to recapture the genius of that book (so far in vain, but I still hold out hope - reading Song of Kali next, which many people say is the best of his

Good call.  This story also appeared in a horror compilation movie in the 1980's, and they actually did a really, really good job with it as I remember.

Apologies if somebody noted this below already, but I always felt like this show did an excellent job of portraying what an actual marriage looks like, and, along with Roseanne, was one of the best on TV at it.  In addition to actually getting right what conversations between married people actually sound like and

I remember this episode very well.  And you're right that this show had a good way with subtly getting across points like this.

I think many, many people - myself included - agree with your take on the first DT book.  I'm prepared to admit that it's on a short list of his best work, and without a doubt it's singular among his novels for its tone and style alone.  I wish he could still write something else like it.

I remember being absolutely terrified by the short story "The Wendigo" in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark when I was really little, mostly by the accompanying supremely creedy illustration.  Years later, reading PS, this section freaked me out too, though it's tough to say what was King and what was the shampoo

I'm with Some Kind of Munster - Pet Semetary was always my favorite of King's "stand alone" novels, and I still think his second-strongest (after The Long Walk, IMO), but as the parent of a 16 month old there's just no way in fucking hell I could read that passage describing Louis' fingers just scraping the back of

God I love Grizzly Bear.  Saw them in Chicago at the Riviera last month, and it was honestly one of the best live shows I've ever been to.  Just incredible, even despite the absolutely horrible sound at the Riv.  And as much as I love the first two albums, Shields may be the best thing they've done so far.

That's actually a really interesting take on Wash's death, Zack.  I don't agree, mostly for the reasons K. Thrace notes below - his death, like Book's, attaches a price to Mal's actions and his decisions, which is really important for the movie and as a thematic tie-in to the entire show - but I respect your passion
