Nah the rule the way it is now is actually probably as good as it could be. It makes complete sense that you have to maintain complete possession of the ball through contact with the ground. If it was the way you stated above a reciever making a diving catch who goes to the ground and drops the ball would then result…

Even if he was touched since he was on his way to the ground he still would have maintained possession all the way to the ground. IMO this is the best and only way the rule should work.
