Has there been a 6th Die Hard?
In the novelization Obi-Wan telling Luke that Darth Vader killed his father was preceded by this sentence: “Unlike Owen Lars, however, Kenobi was unable to take refuge in a comfortable lie.” Knowing what we know now I thought it was funny that this was framed as him telling the hard truth rather than a “comfortable…
I was never really grossed out by the Luke/Leia romance. I mean, they didn’t know.
Yeah, but it seems to me like Republicans hate corporations now, so while corporate vaccine mandates might sway some people I think others will be even more convinced that refusing to get vaccinated makes them freedom fighters or something.
The first Die Hard movie was also a repurposed idea: it was based on the Roderick Thorp novel Nothing Lasts Forever, which was a sequel to his novel The Detective, which was made into a movie of the same name starring Frank Sinatra.
I think you’re overestimating how much they’re motivated by pure self-interest as opposed to a desire to see themselves as principled freedom fighters.
Why would “othering” them make them change their behavior?
I look forward to complaining about how her apology was too little, too late.
I’ve never prided myself on being edgy, so it’s pretty unlikely I’d ever wanna use it either. I think I can still defend other people’s right to use it on those rare occasions when it’s arguably justifiable.
I never said it wasn’t a big deal in the vast majority of circumstances, just that there are rare exceptions to that rule.
Please tell me what’s racist about my use of the word “nigger” in this sentence.
I wasn’t trying to argue that one black friend would justify using the n-word in front of any and all black people, just whether it would be fine to use it in front of a black person who is fine with it him/herself. This isn’t something that’s objectively true for everyone like climate change, this seems to me like we…
Do you think non-famous people should also never use it even in a private, non-insulting manner?
Why should we let white supremacists affect our language use?
I’d say he should ask any black friends he has what they think. That’s my point, though, is that I think there actually are gray areas to this. Like, what if he had a black friend who was fine with it? Would you say the friend’s opinion is irrelevant?
We’ve had centuries’ worth of change during that time.
I don’t buy the idea that intent is irrelevant. What makes something a slur if not the intent?
Does context not matter as far as how words are used?
Why would that stand out with how much other sports failure they’ve had since?
