Would slaves have been better off if America hadn't declared its independence?

Yeah, but there's a good reason you can't say for sure what your attitude towards slavery would've been, and that's because people are frequently unpredictable.

I realize that Trump makes it tempting to be all "The idiocracy is here!" but we should remember that half a century ago supporting segregation was a mainstream position and the gay rights movement was nonexistent.

I think we don't give him a pass, we acknowledge the horrible thing he did but say that on balance he's done a lot more good than bad.

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were bad people and all the good they did was negated by the fact that they owned slaves? Many people are full of moral contradictions like that.

I think it's unfair to dismiss the scenes in the original of Asner's character's hesitance with "Wah wah, you have second thoughts about carrying slaves!" Sedale Threatt, Jr.? Was Olden Polynice, Jr. not available?

‘I didn’t know there was anyone who could stay home eight nights in a row.’

People who grew up in the '80s are old now?

Are we really the best people to be complaining about something being an adolescent nerd fantasy?

"He's like this little kid and then his dad dies and he's very sad.".

"Those inaccuracies happened for only one reason: I wasn't strong enough to stop it."

Sorkin: "I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who watches the entertainment that I provide, and then questions the accuracy of how I provide it!"

I think the whole "vegetarians are self-righteous" thing has gotten to the point where meat-eaters(of which I am one) can be kinda self-righteous in mocking them.

Has everyone forgotten Fred?

It sucks that on a day like today so many people can't find a reasonable middle ground between guilt-tripping anyone who doesn't worship the military and going "The military doesn't protect my freedom."

One cool thing about that article is that it mentions Westeros as one of the fake original colonies. This was in 2006, before GoT made that a mainstream reference.
