I don't think Stephen was ever quite as edgy as you might think; I'd say the Correspondents' Dinner was more the exception than the rule. I think Stephen was only pointing out how Republicans consider Reagan a great president, not that Stephen himself does. He's pointing out their hypocrisy by holding them up to the example of the man they claim to hold in such high esteem.

I doubt Trump supporters care what the media has to say about him. I think that if just pointing out that he's a bigot would bring down his campaign, he wouldn't still be leading in the polls.
