As someone who has tried, the flexibility of plastic doesn't work well with paint.

I hate plastic trim on cars. It’s difficult to maintain after 5 years of sun. I use “back to black” after washing and it does a good job, but it’s an annoying extra step every time I wash. My Camaro isn't that bad, but my wife's Traverse is half plastic with a white paint job. Entire lower part of Traverse is plastic!
