From what I was hearing, the Board didn’t want to suspend him at all, but the President threatened to resign if there wasn’t a suspension. The AD didn’t show up until 8 hours after the meeting started and the compromise was made after the SEC Network tuned out for the night. 

I really do wonder if his 38 million dollar buyout factored into the decision.  From a purely monetary standpoint they saved about 40 million by suspending rather than firing him.  Although they could have tried to fire him for cause it probably would’ve been difficult and extremely messy.  Bottom line is, buyouts…
